You literally couldn’t write it. There’s now a story doing the rounds that Neymar has told president Nasser Al-Khelaifi that he wants Edinson Cavani offloaded.
The two argued over who should take a penalty in their toughest test of the season so far against Lyon on Sunday, the second time it has happened since Neymar’s £198 million move to Paris. Neymar attempted to take the penalty off his colleague and was again snubbed, as Cavani promptly told him where to go before seeing his effort saved in brilliant fashion by Anthony Lopes.
There was also an incident where Cavani went to take a free-kick and Dani Alves nabbed the ball off him, like a year 11 pupil would do to take a year 7’s football, before passing it to Neymar to take. He claims that he was trying to take the set-piece himself before Neymar took the ball off him, but we’re having none of it.
Earlier today, we told you how French outletL’Equipereported that an altercation between the two took place, with Cavani unhappy with the way Neymar conducted himself and the most expensive player giving it back to his strike partner. Captain Thiago Silva is said to have intervened to defuse things and stop it from getting physical.
Further information has been brought to the table by Catalan newspaperSPORT,specifically writer Jordi Blanco, who not only says that Neymar squared up to Cavani in the dressing room after the 2-0 win over Lyon, but that the relationship between the two is so strained that the most expensive player has demanded Cavani is sold.
Al-Khelaifi, the man who brought Neymar to PSG, promised the Brazilian that he would be the star and the main man at the Parc des Princes, and just six weeks into his tenure with the Parisiens, he wants PSG’s number nine offloaded as he feels there is no way he can co-exist with the Uruguayan. It’s said that while “Neymar shows his best face off in public” behind closed doors that smile transforms.
With the backing of the Brazilians, Neymar has huge power in the PSG dressing room and he reportedly wants Cavani, who scored 49 goals last season, sold sooner rather than later. The January transfer window is of course, the earliest that can happen, but that may bring some problems as Cavani would be unable to play in the Champions League if he was to move to a team competing in the Europe’s top club competition. However, a summer move could well be on the cards, and Cavani would certainly have plenty of suitors.
The 29-year old has played down talk of a rift between the two though, tellingGol de Medianoche de Radio Universal, viaThe Independentthat the stories are untrue.
“These things are created. I don’t know why these stories are created. The truth is that these are normal things; things that happen in football,”he said.
“I learned of the story just now talking with my brother, about people saying that Cavani won’t let anyone take penalties and that there’s a problem with Neymar. The truth is that there’s no problem.
“He [Neymar] has just arrived and like I said from the off we are keen for him to adapt in the best way possible. I think that’s been proven because you can see he is adapting quickly.”
Thoughts on the story that Neymar wants Cavani out? Do you smell bullshit?
